ALCATEL SPEEDTOUCH 510 v3 MAC SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
(with a little versatility this will work for the new v4 routers as well
but see HERE for a 510v4 setup guide; less pics, but less hassle!)

Before you start you need the following:

510 Router, plugged into the power and adsl socket as instructed by your ISP. Your username and password, and the Domain name server addresses, supplied to you by your ISP. Ethernet cable as supplied plugged between your Mac and the router.

We also suggest you print this page, as it will make things easier. Tick off each action as you proceed.

To set up the 510, you need to do the following:

  1. Download this file
  2. Open your text editor of choice such as BBEdit Lite/Full (9 or X), Pepper (X), TextEdit in OSX or SimpleText in classic MacOS.
  3. Next find the strings: add_your_ADSL_username_here, and add_your_ADSL_password_here and substitute your ISP-provided username and password (for BTOpenworld the username will be something like fredbloggs@hg24.btclick.com, and a password you have chosen when ordering the adsl service).
  4. You need to choose an admin name and password. Do so and MAKE A NOTE OF THEM, and perform the relevant substitutions, on the same basis as step 3, but looking for add_your_admin_username_here instead.
  5. There is more than 1 instance of these; be sure to retain the " ", where they already exist, and not to add them when they don't!
  6. Save it to your desktop as a plain text file called 510.ini with DOS carriage returns.
  7. It is CRUCIAL that you do not amend the file in any other way than as detailed above, and that it is saved as a plain text file, with DOS carriage returns with the title 510.ini
  8. Restore the unit to factory defaults, by poking a paperclip through the hole in the back of the unit whilst powered up
  9. Open TCP settings (Apple Menu, Control panels, TCP/IP or Network System Prefs in OS X). Hit Cmd-K, duplicate the existing configuration, and rename it to ADSL 510 setup, or something similar (the name is not important). Make these settings active.
  10. Change the TCP settings that appear to: configure Manually, via Ethernet, IP Address 10.0.0.10, subnet mask to 255.0.0.0, router address to 10.0.0.138.
  11. Open your web browser, and surf to address http://10.0.0.138. This will open an interface window to the router.
  12. Click on on the left. This will open the following window, The relevant buttons are circled in red.
  13. Click in the second set of options, and navigate to the 510.ini file (wherever it was downloaded to), and select it.
  14. Click . You should receive confirmation that the file has been successfully uploaded. If you get the red "File Truncated" error at the top, then you need to tinker with the text file that you created until it works. The error means that some part of the copying process has added some extra info to the file. BBEdit Lite is probably the best editor to use.(We copied the config text from an email, and pasted it into TextEdit under OS X)
  15. Click to reboot the router.
  16. When the 2 right hand lights have stopped flashing on the router, change your tcp settings (amend the existing setup, don't make a new config) on your mac to: IP address 192.168.10.10, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, router address 192.168.10.100, and add the Domain Name Server addresses in the relevant box. Close and Save the changes. These are your FINAL tcp/ip settings. All other Machines in your network should use an IP address of 192.168.10.x (where x is a unique number between 1 & 254), with the other values in their tcp settings being as per this paragraph.
  17. Switch to your browser. In the address bar, input http://192.168.10.100, and hit return to surf to the router again.
  18. Click on on the left, then the button in the command list and the link should say CONNECTED and the status should display UP, as per the following screenshot:
  19. You should now be online. Happy (fast!) surfing.
